On Saturday, October 17, the Downtown Street Market sets up under the water tower at 10 a.m. with an Oktoberfest theme and a chili cook-off. Founders' Day week is running at the same time. At 6:45 that evening, the Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Walk starts at Tom Varn Park. That one day says a lot about how Brooksville's fall calendar works.
The City of Brooksville posted a notice on September 22 listing the events where council members may show up this fall. Read it next to the Brooksville Main Street calendar and a pattern stands out. Most of the season falls on four Saturdays in October, and each of those Saturdays has two, three or four things going on. If you look up events one at a time, you'll find out about the overlaps after they happen. It works better to go by date.
The October Saturdays at a Glance
| Date | What's on | Where |

| Sat., Oct. 10 | Under the Olive Tree grand opening, 10 a.m.–6 p.m.; Founders' Day week begins; HarvestMoon Fright Nights begin | 26 E. Liberty St.; downtown; Masaryktown |

| Sat., Oct. 24 | Hernando Hustle 5K, 8 a.m.; pumpkin patch; Halloween Howl and HCSO Safety Fest, 4–8 p.m. | Tom Varn Park; downtown |
These are mostly free, recurring civic events, and they cluster for a simple reason. Brooksville Main Street runs a monthly Friday Night Live and a monthly Saturday Street Market, and the city's parks events fill in around them. November goes back to the regular monthly schedule. October has extra events on top of it.
October 3: Two Fall Openers on One Day
The season starts this Saturday with the first Harvest Howl Fest. It's hosted by Hernando County Sheriff's Office Animal Services and the City of Brooksville at Tom Varn Park, 301 Darby Ln., from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This is the first year for the event, so there's no earlier version to go by. The city confirmed the date again in its September 22 notice.
The same day is also the first full weekend of the HarvestMoon Fun Farm Fall Festival at 15990 Stur St. in Masaryktown. The festival opened September 26 and runs through November 8. Bay News 9 reported that this year's corn maze has two sections. Children read "Spookley the Square Pumpkin" as they go through the kids' maze, and adults play a game that helps them find the exit. Co-owner Christina Falakos designed, planted and cut the maze herself. The farm also has pumpkin picking, hayrides, a petting farm, games and food.
HarvestMoon is the one big fall event outside Brooksville's downtown and parks. It also runs the longest, so it's a good fallback for any weekend when the in-town calendar is light.
October 9 and 10: Friday Night Into a New Storefront
Friday Night Live comes back to the Hernando Park Bandshell, 205 E. Fort Dade Ave., on October 9 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. John Hindman & The Mustang Mafia are playing.
Saturday morning brings the biggest downtown opening of the fall. Under the Olive Tree opens at 26 E. Liberty St. at 10 a.m. on October 10, and the city lists the grand opening as running until 6 p.m. The shop is a gourmet tasting room. It sells extra-virgin olive oils, aged balsamic vinegars, spices, teas and gourmet treats, and staff offer samples and pairing suggestions. The opening announcement comes from three women named Dawn, Christie and Tracy, who invite the community to stop by.
October 10 also starts two longer events. The city's annual Founders' Day events run October 10 through 17 at downtown locations and Brooksville Cemetery. As of the September 22 notice, the cemetery details were still listed as "TBD," so watch for the schedule. HarvestMoon's Fright Nights also begin October 10 and run through October 30. Bay News 9 says the haunted nights are on Friday and Saturday nights for most of October, and the farm posts the exact dates on its fall schedule page.
October 16 and 17: The Pumpkin Patch Opens, and the Busiest Saturday
The pumpkin patch at Tom Varn Park opens on the evening of Friday, October 16. The city calls October 18 through 31 the "Pumpkin Patch Park Takeover," with all-day events Tuesday through Sunday. The patch's event listing gives these hours:
- Tuesday through Thursday: 2 to 8 p.m.
- Friday: 3 to 9 p.m.
- Saturday and Sunday: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- Monday: closed
Weekend hours at the patch end at 4 p.m. Several of October's downtown events start later in the day, so you can visit the patch in the morning and still make an evening event without a conflict.
October 16 has one more item on the city's list. Patriot Pole Barns is holding a ribbon cutting at noon at 501 N. Broad St.
Then comes October 17, the busiest day of the season. The Downtown Street Market's Oktoberfest and Chili Cook-off runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Historic S. Brooksville Avenue and Liberty Street, under the water tower. The pumpkin patch is open on its Saturday hours, and it's the last day of Founders' Day week. That evening, the Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Walk starts at Tom Varn Park at 6:45 p.m. One Saturday has four events, from late morning to after dark.
October 24: An 8 a.m. Start and a 4 p.m. Start
The next Saturday also starts early. The Hernando Hustle 5K Walk and Run, a Chamber event, starts at 8 a.m. at Tom Varn Park. The pumpkin patch opens at 8 a.m. on Saturdays, so the race and the patch are at the same park at the same time.
Later, downtown has the free Halloween Howl and HCSO Safety Fun Fest, organized by Brooksville Main Street and the Hernando County Sheriff's Office, from 4 to 8 p.m. The patch closes at 4, right when the downtown event starts.
The Weekdays In Between
Weekday events are fewer, but they're there. The pumpkin patch stays open Tuesday through Friday afternoons and evenings. The city's Truck or Treat is at Tom Varn Park on Wednesday, October 28. The September 22 notice still listed the time as TBD, so check with the city as the date gets closer. HarvestMoon's Fright Nights end October 30, and the Park Takeover ends October 31.
Two New Stops on South Broad
Both of the other new openings this fall are on the same stretch of South Broad Street. Chipotle Mexican Grill opened September 16 at 1185 S. Broad St. It has a Chipotlane for drive-through pickup of online and mobile orders, and Hernando Today reported its hours as 10:45 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. 7 Brew Coffee is a drive-through at 1194 South Broad Street. The city scheduled its ribbon cutting for September 2.
Those two drive-throughs fit around the October schedule above, like a coffee before the 8 a.m. 5K on October 24 or a pickup order on the way home from Masaryktown. Under the Olive Tree is a different kind of shop. It's a walk-in tasting room on Liberty Street, a short walk from the market's spot under the water tower, and it opens one week before the October 17 Street Market.
November Calms Down
After October, the calendar goes back to its monthly rhythm. Friday Night Live returns to the Hernando Park Bandshell on November 13 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., with The Gaturz. That same morning at 9 a.m., the 10th Annual Field of Honor Ceremony is held at Notre Dame Catholic School, 1095 Commercial Way, in Spring Hill. HarvestMoon's daytime festival wraps up November 8.
The last market of the fall is the Downtown Street Market's Thankful Friendsgiving on Saturday, November 21, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Historic S. Brooksville Avenue and Liberty Street.
Schedules change, and a few items, including Founders' Day and Truck or Treat, still had details to be announced. Before you head out, check the City of Brooksville's posted notice and the Brooksville Main Street events page.
